Choosing a campervan company in New Zealand is mostly a question of where you land, how old the driver is and how much risk you want to carry on insurance. The ten companies below cover almost every budget, from hand-painted backpacker vans to brand-new motorhomes with a shower.

We ranked them on the things that change a trip: whether you can start and finish in different cities, what happens if your plans change, where the depots are, who can drive, and what the standard insurance leaves you paying if something goes wrong. Prices for the vans themselves move with the season, so we compare the parts that don’t: depots, rules, inclusions and the published cost of reducing your excess.

Quick answer

  • Best overall: Indie Campers, for one-way trips between Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown, free cancellation up to 31 days before pick-up and a book-now-pay-later option.

Before you book: three rules that matter in New Zealand

Freedom camping needs a green warrant

Freedom camping means staying overnight on public land outside a campground. Councils only allow it in vehicles certified as self-contained, and since 7 June 2026 that means a green warrant and a toilet fixed to the floor, according to the Department of Conservation. Vans with a portable toilet no longer qualify. Most companies on this list rent both certified and non-certified vans, so if you want to freedom camp, check the specific model, not just the brand. Our New Zealand campervan guide covers the rules and campsites in detail.

Insurance is the real price difference

Every company includes basic cover in its rate, but basic cover leaves you liable for an excess of up to NZ$7,500 at the larger brands. Reducing that to zero costs extra per day. On a 14-day hire, the difference between a NZ$22.50 and a NZ$93 daily option is NZ$987, which can be more than the gap in van prices. Several companies also cap the total you pay for cover per hire, so check for a maximum.

Diesel vans carry road user charges

In New Zealand, diesel vehicles pay road user charges (RUC) per kilometre instead of a tax at the pump. Some companies pass this on: Britz lists a diesel RUC fee of about NZ$8 per 100 km, and Mad Campers NZ$8 per 100 km. Wendekreisen includes it in the rate. On a 3,000 km (1,860 mi) trip, NZ$8 per 100 km adds NZ$240.

The 10 best campervan hire companies in New Zealand, in detail

1. Indie Campers

indiecampers.com · screenshot, October 2026

Indie Campers was founded in Lisbon in 2013 and now has an owned fleet of more than 10,000 vehicles across Europe, North America and Oceania, according to the company. In New Zealand it runs three depots: Auckland (107 Harris Road, East Tāmaki), Christchurch (189 Blenheim Road, Riccarton, about 16 km or 10 mi from the airport) and Queenstown (1 Bowen Street).

Ideal for: couples and families planning a one-way trip, such as Christchurch to Queenstown, and anyone booking months ahead who wants to keep plans flexible.

Why it stands out: One-way travel is supported between all three depots, so a South Island trip doesn’t have to end with a long drive back. You can cancel free of charge up to 31 days before pick-up, and the company offers a book-now-pay-later option. A selected part of its own fleet comes with unlimited mileage, and 24/7 support is included. The fleet runs from 2-berth vans to the 6-berth Family Plus, and most models have a shower and toilet. Indie Campers is rated 4.7 from more than 73,000 travellers on its own site.

  • Free cancellation up to 31 days before pick-up, book now and pay later
  • Wide fleet, from 2-berth vans to 6-berth family campers
  • Basic protection included, with three optional protection plans
  • 24/7 support during the trip

Cons

  • Minimum driver age is 21
  • Unlimited mileage applies to selected vehicles only, so check your model
  • The site doesn’t list which models carry a green self-containment warrant; ask before you book if you plan to freedom camp
  • No depot in Wellington or Picton

How to choose campervan hire in New Zealand

Ask every company the same six questions before you compare nightly rates. The cheapest headline price can hide a long drive back to the depot, a per-kilometre charge or a booking you can’t change.

  1. Can you start and end in different cities? If you land in Christchurch and fly home from Queenstown, you need a company with both depots and a one-way option. Indie Campers, maui, Britz, Apollo and JUCY have both; Wendekreisen makes Auckland to Christchurch free.
  2. What happens if your plans change? Ask for the free-cancellation window in days and what you get back inside it. Indie Campers allows free cancellation up to 31 days before pick-up; Travellers Autobarn’s free window ends about two weeks before.
  3. When do you pay? Some companies take a deposit at booking, others let you pay later. On a trip booked six months out, that changes your cash flow.
  4. Can you freedom camp in that exact van? You need a green warrant and a fixed toilet. Several brands rent both certified and non-certified models.
  5. What will the whole trip cost? Add the nightly rate, the daily cost of the cover you want, any one-way fee and any road user charges.
  6. Who can drive? Minimum ages run from 18 to 21. Your licence must be in English or come with an accurate translation or an international driving permit, according to NZ Police.
