How we research

Every guide on Travel Addicted is either a trip we drove ourselves or a research piece built from sources we can name. This page explains both, and how we keep them up to date.

Two kinds of article

Trips we drove

Itineraries and destination guides marked as our own trips are written from the route we actually drove: the distances from our own logs, the campsites we slept at, and the prices we paid. When we say "we'd skip this", it's because we tried it.

Research guides and rankings

Some guides, such as comparisons of rental companies or campsites in a region, are built from research rather than a single trip. For rankings we:

  1. Run the search a reader would type (for example on Google or Google Maps) and note the date.
  2. Take the businesses Google shows first, skipping paid ads, duplicates and businesses that don't match the topic.
  3. Record their Google rating and number of reviews on that date.
  4. Read each company's official website for the facts we publish: what they offer, who they suit, opening times and published prices.

Each ranking explains its search, its date and how the list was ordered in a "How we researched this" box near the top.

What we don't do

  • We don't accept payment, free rentals or gifts in exchange for coverage.
  • We don't use affiliate links and the site has no ads.
  • We don't publish claims we can't source. Marketing claims are attributed to the company ("according to their website").

Prices, rules and roads change

We give prices with the currency and the month we saw them, because rental and campsite prices move with the season. Rules on wild and freedom camping differ between countries and regions and change often, so we link to the official source where one exists and say when we last checked it. Mountain passes and some roads close in winter; we say when.

Units

We write for readers in the US and other English-speaking countries, so distances are given in kilometres and miles the first time they appear, and temperatures in °C and °F.

Updates and corrections

Every article shows the date it was last updated. We review our most-read guides every few months. If you find something wrong or out of date, please tell us and we'll fix it.
